There are many Americans who want to come to Vietnam for working, traveling, or even living. Thanks to the priority of Vietnam’s visa policy for the US passport holders has been making a trip to the country easier.

Do U.S. Citizens Need a Visa for Vietnam?

Until now, there is no exemption policy for American passport holders who come to Vietnam whether for purpose of visiting, traveling, trading, or meeting. However, Vietnam visas for Americans are provided easily and cost less than some other countries. Besides obtaining a visa at the Embassy/Consulate, the Vietnamese Government offers permission for US residents to apply for visas via Evisa and Visa on arrival. Furthermore, the US is the only nationality licensed to obtain a Vietnam visa which valid for 6 months and 1-year multiple entries.

How to get a Vietnam visa for US citizens?

As we have mentioned above, there are many ways to obtain a Vietnam visa for American citizens

1. Get visa to Vietnam via the Vietnamese diplomatic missions office in the United States or in other countries.

In the traditional way, American passport holders can apply for a visa at one of the Embassies/Consulates of Vietnam in the US or other nations. A visa to Vietnam will be issued by the Vietnamese Immigration Department, then faxed to the office. American passport holders or foreign travelers need to submit the original passport, fill in the visa application form, provide official letters allowing entry into Vietnam, and a stamping fee in accordance with the regulations of the Embassy/Consulate to get a visa. There are 02 types of visas issued by the Embassy/Consulate: loose-leaf visa and sticker Visa. 

Visa processing time: 5-7 working days.

Vietnam Visa fees vary depending on the type of visa, length of stay and type of service (standard or quick). 

Visa application costs include visa approval fees, faxing, handling and processing fees, postal services and urgent services (if any).

2. Vietnam E-visa

The Vietnam Immigration has launched electronic visa system on 1 February 2017. 

The e-visas have a cost of US$25 and are granted for single entry visits for up to 30 days to nationals of the following 81 eligible countries and territories, include the US. Applicants can obtain the visa without visiting the Vietnam diplomatic missions office, follow two simple steps: filing information and paying online. 

Information provided for the visa will be checked at border checkpoint in Vietnam. If you provide inaccurate information, your e-Visa will be invalid and you will be denied entry to the country.

Almost same as the way apply for a visa at Embassy/Consulate, it takes 5 working days to get the E-visa.

3. Vietnam on Arrival for US citizen

Visa on arrival (VOA) is an alternative way that allow foreigners get a visa stamp upon arrival border checkpoint in Vietnam when submit the visa approval letter. This letters are issued by the Immigration Department allowing you to enter and exit Vietnam within a certain period of time. International border checkpoints where foreigners can get on arrival visas include Noi Bai airport (Hanoi), Tan Son Nhat airport (Ho Chi Minh City), Da Nang airport (Da nang city), Phu Quoc airport (Phu Quoc island), Cat Bi airport (Hai Phong), Lien Khuong airport (Da Lat city) or Cam Ranh airport (Nha Trang).

On arrival international airport, foreigners need to present passports, the visa approval letters, complete the visa application form (Form NA1) and pay the visa stamping fee, regulated by Vietnamese Goverment, as prescribed below.

  • 25$/person for 1 month and 3 months single entry
  • 50$ for 1 month multiple entries and (less) 3 months multiple entries
  • 95$/person for less than 6 months multiple entries
  • 135$/person for other types of Visa.
